Kate discovers her power to control soot at her will. This makes Emilico wonder if those soot phantoms are controlled by someone having powers like Kate.

1. Episode 4 Preview And Speculations
In the preview, preparations for the 'debut' ceremony are taking place. The lords of Shadows House talk about disposing of a defective piece.
Edward is chosen as the judge of the 'debut' ceremony. He thinks that it's his perfect opportunity to get noticed by Lord Grandfather (Oji-sama), and he hopes he will be promoted to the third floor.
In Episode 4, Barbie will be mad at other Living dolls for not being able to deal with the phantom situation effectively. She will probably scold Rosemary and her squad for being so clumsy.
Since the title is "Watchers in the Night," I think Barbie will assign them for night duties to avoid further phantom attacks.

I. A Tour Around the Shadows House
Since it's Emilico's first day at work, Rosemary decides to show her the entire estate. She forbids her from going to certain rooms and stairways where the masked dolls work.
Surprisingly, Mia acts friendly even after last day's rude behavior. She explains that it was Sarah's emotion that she portrayed, and she bears no hatred towards Emilico.
Soon they reach the door behind which the debut ceremony takes place. Rosemary and Mia explain that it is a vital event for the doll and her mistress since their compatibility will be tested.
They advise her to stay loyal towards the Shadow family, that's what matters the most. However, they refrain from giving her any more detail about the ceremony as they aren't allowed to.
II. Phantom Attack
As Rosemary was advising Emilico not to talk about Lord Grandfather so casually, the emergency bell starts ringing. It's a soot phantom's attack in the basement.
Barbie orders the dolls to attack the phantom with hammers. Before going any further, I want to clarify the concept of phantoms.
Soot is generated from the negative emotions of the Okage-samas. When the collected soot gains consciousness and starts moving with ill-intent, they are called phantoms.
Rosemary gets targeted by moving soot, and it starts controlling her body. Thanks to Emilico's impulsive decision of splashing water from a vase, Rosemary was saved.
III. Soot-sickness
Although Rosemary gets rid of the soot, she is in a bad shape. He can hardly react to anything and gazes blankly. This condition is called 'Soot-sickness.'
Soot-sickness happens when too much soot enters a doll's body. If left untreated, it will break the living doll from inside.
Thanks to the swift actions of the first-aid department, Rosemary recovered from it within few days. She had to drink a lot of water to remove the soot from her body.
IV. Kate's Newfound Power
Kate discovers her ability to control soot. However, she can do that for a very brief period. She didn't know that Shadows can do such a thing.
She asks Emilico to keep this a secret until she finds more about it and explores her powers' extent.

5. About Shadows House
Shadows House is a slice of life supernatural manga by Soumatou. It was first released in Weekly Young Jump in September 2018.
The anime takes us to the mysterious, western-style mansion populated by a clan of "Shadows," who imitate the trappings of human aristocracy. The Shadows have no faces and are attended by "Living dolls."
The story follows Emiriko, a doll who serves Living Shadow Kate. Apart from being her maid, Emiriko is expected to become Kate's "face" once her mistress is old enough to be introduced to the other mansion residents.
